I'm writing this blog to share the stories from families like mine. My family is a rich combination of two cultures. I am the oldest child of white parents. My parents come from working class families, got married very young, and have worked hard to pull our family into the middle class. My husband is the oldest child of Indian parents. His parents moved to the US to pursue college degrees after their arranged marriage in India.
My family of origin searched for religion for most of my childhood and finally found Unitarian Universalism when I was 19. My sister and I feel at home in the UU church. My brother became a Catholic when he got married.
My husband's family of origin is Hindu. They value the strong traditions and culture of the Hindu religion and India as a whole. My husband follows the philosophies of Hinduism, but did not independently follow the ceremonies when we met. Since the birth of our daughter, he has begun to want more interactions with the Hindu community.
We have one daughter, who will be 1 on Thanksgiving this year, and another baby on the way, due in February.
Our lives are a continuous balancing act to value and respect all our different cultures. Constant negotiations about different styles of communication, ways of showing respect, and ways of living daily life add adventure to the already interesting process of marriage. This is just the beginning, and I will post something about us and other intercultural people/families at least once a week. Thanks for reading!
